Solomon Group is looking for an experienced CAD Draftsman/Detailer to work with our design team and in our fabrication shop.

Potential candidates must enjoy a fast paced work environment, handling numerous projects of a diverse nature. Responsibilities include creating technical drawings for use by carpenters, welders, and other craftsmen; annotate and dimension provided drawings; find and present research material to assist with construction; help organize shared computer files; adapt/create/adjust drawings in collaboration with CNC operators; conduct site visits to gather measurements; and generally assist the Technical Director in communicating clear, accurate information to the craftsmen on the floor.

The ideal candidate must have the following:

  • Proficiency with Sketch Up and Layout, as well as experience with other CAD programs such as AutoCad or VectorWorks
  • Experience with Mac computers
  • Good communication skills
  • A valid driver’s license
  • The ability to maintain an even temper under tight turnaround times and stressful conditions

Carpenter (details)

Solomon Group is looking for an experienced high-end design and build fabrication shop carpenter/millworker/machinist.  We are looking for talented people with previous experience in event, exhibition, set and retail fixture fabrication.  Must have a minimum of 3 years of carpentry work experience.

The right candidate must be able to work cleanly, efficiently and safely while maintaining high finish quality under short deadlines.  Previous cabinet joinery, millwork, metalworking, laminate and plastics experience in a shop setting needed.  Work to include fabrication, install and strike.

Must be able to read shop plans.  Experience in any of the following: CNC operating and programming, large-format printing, vinyl application, sculpting, casting or spray-finishing is not required but is a large plus.

Responsible for fabrication, maintenance, service and installation of equipment, as related to the event and rental production industry.  The person hired will cut, sand, build, contruct, paint and repair wood product, build scenic/stage projects and assist in the fabrication and construction of sets on show sites.  The position is responsible for completing projects in the most efficient and effective manner.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Maintenance and service of equipment on an as needed and scheduled basis.
  • Custom fabrication, assembly and finish work of wood, metal and plastic products as related to Company business.
  • Troubleshooting and repair of rental production equipment.
  • Responsible for operation of the following equipment: Table Saw, Drill Press, Miter Saw/Chop Saw, Router - Hand and Table, Air Tools - Fasteners, wrenches, air sprayers, etc.
  • Assist with the preventative maintenance of equipment.
  • Work in a safe, positive manner showing respect to others and contributing to the team.
  • Assist with and work production event on an as needed basis.
  • Occasionally work on installation sites in assisting Project Managers.

Solomon Group is looking for an experienced CNC Programmer/Operator.  The right candidate must have experience with tooling selection and basic 2D CAD work.  Must also have the ability to read/write G-Code programming.

Job duties include:

  • Preparing a variety of material for routing.  Materials may include, but are not limited to wood, aluminum, plastics, and high density foam.
  • Receiving routing files electronically and transferring designs to the cutting table.
  • Using router to make cuts with appropriate bits, speed and design.
  • Monitoring quality and speed of production.
  • Collaborate with Supervisor to meet production goals and identify ways to improve work flow and quality processes.
  • Evaluate workload to determine if overtime should be requested to meet deadlines.
  • Communicate with other department personnel in establishing and carrying out responsibilities.
  • Monitor the work area, materials, tools and supplies. 
  • Request new supplies as required.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of stock materials.

Solomon Group is looking for a Lead Production Assistant to work alongside the producers for the 2013 ESSENCE Festival.  The primary venues for ESSENCE Festival include the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.  THIS IS A PART-TIME POSITION that runs from approximately April 22, 2013 – July 15, 2013.

Job responsibilities from April 22, 2013 through June 28, 2013 include (approximately 30-40 hours weekly):

• Taking part in weekly and bi-weekly production calls;
• Assisting the producers with manging vendors & contractors;
• Maintaining weekly task lists and reporting/confirming project milestones;
• Preparing materials such as site maps and other general information.

Job responsibilities from June 29, 2013 through July 8, 2013 include (full time – event set-up, execution, breakdown):
• Assisting in the credential process;
• Building strong relationships with both new and existing stakeholders.  
• Assisting with production vendors including but not limited to Video, Lighting, Sound, Catering, Security, and Transportation.
• Work on-site at all functions managing the ESSENCE Festival production/operations office.

The ideal candidate should encompass superior hospitality, time, and project management skills. Candidate must be able to work a flexible schedule and be able to work the duration of the event, including set-up, event execution and break down. Long hours are required for events of this nature and may require you to be accessible 24 hours a day for the duration of the event.
