After a long-standing relationship with a leading scenic group, WDSU-TV in New Orleans decided to look for a new design/build partner. And when the historic NBC affiliate station reached out to Solomon Group about redesigning their main studio set, the assignment came with an interesting challenge.
The project’s limited budget wouldn’t allow for the creation of an entirely new broadcast environment from the ground up. Still, their 6-year old set was in need of an interim upgrade that would provide a fresh and more modern look. The station’s management team wanted us to integrate more technology throughout the set. It was also crucial to maximize the number of standing positions for their anchors and reporters. Finally, the redesigned set had to work beautifully with WDSU-TV’s vibrant new graphics package.
By working with the framework of the existing set, Solomon Group was able provide a sleek and contemporary “refresh” of the environment that was cost-effective. This value-engineered approach reduced costs as well as the amount of time that the station’s main set was off the air.
As a further cost-cutting measure, we used as many of the existing set’s monitors as possible in the new design, while adding more video displays to the environment as requested. We also integrated customizable scenic lighting into the anchor desk and weather pod. Capable of displaying any color desired, these LED lights can be used to create different looks among daily newscasts (for instance, warmer for the morning newscast, cooler for the evening shows), or during holidays and awareness months.
The result? An affordable, redesigned set for Louisiana’s first television station that is as vibrant as it is versatile.
